Project Development

 Week 18

This was the final week of school and the week where we did the presentation of our chemical product.

Our group's product was a Egg Boiler.

The reason for an Egg Boiler was that in our daily life, we always fail to cook a perfect hard boil egg in the morning, and that we are too lazy to go to a nearby coffee shop in the morning, and that when we try and make it our selves, it does not come the way that we want it to be and it would destroy our mood for the whole day.

In our group, there are 4 members, myself, Zhi Wei, Ryan Andrew, and Uzair.

This is the finalized BOM for our group and the Gantt Chart.

For the distribution of the workload,

Zhi Wei and Uzair did the Arduino Programming

Ryan Andrew and I did the CAD, laser cutting, and 3D printing.

For this chemical product, I was in charge of creating the CAD for the platform for the boiling chamber, and for the final assembly of the blog.

For the platform, I first used Fusion 360 to create the platform, and I had to create multiple platforms before it would work.

These are the different designs of the platform:

Problems:

There are many challenges that we faced during this project. The ones that I faced, would be that when designing the platform, I had to try many times before I got the design that was to what I wanted it to be with the correct dimensions and the required for our product. The reason that the very last f the design looks very different is because we initially decided to 3D print the platform, but when we put it into Ultimaker Cura and sliced it, the platform would take more than 2 hours to print, and we didn't have enough time to do so, and hence we decided to laser cut it.

We also faced some problems when 3D printing. Ryan Andrew and I had to go for the 3D printing for a total of 2 days. On the first day, we managed to print the Arduino holder, but the Arduino board could not fit and hence we relook at the design and make it bigger. On the second day, we managed to print all the required pieces and the Arduino board fits into the holder, and we also printed the servo holder successfully.

We also had problems during the final assembly. The main problem was attaching the platform to the servo. We failed to consider how to attach the platform to the servo, especially after we decided to laser cut the platform. The acrylic platform was also too weak and the servo was too weak, so I had to figure out a way to attach it, but most of my methods did not work and hence I decided to use a piece of wire to attach the servo to the platform, but it did not work.

Reflection: 💭🧠

Overall, I would first like to thank everyone in the group for being very supportive of each other, especially during the final assembly as we really encouraged each other. From this project, we had a lot of problems as we failed to do some considerations for the egg boiler, one being that we didn't consider to access the button from inside the casing for the Arduino board. Hence, I think that my group learnt a lot from this, like that we really have to stick to the timeline that we planned for ourselves and that we also need to plain ahead to avoid all the problems that we faced and even if we faced problems, we would still have time to resolve them. Moving forward, I think that we have all learnt a lot from this and that main thing that we had to do was to start the project earlier and to really follow that timeline that we gave ourselves. We also have to plan ahead and we have to plan ahead. This project let us learn a lot, and for our final year, when we do our capstone project, we would not make the same mistakes again.
